Scaffolding Engineering Case Study

Scaffolding Engineering for the Great American Tower at Queen City Square in Cincinnati

American Scaffolding, Inc., a full service scaffold company headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, contracted Universal Manufacturing from Zelienople, PA for scaffolding engineering, scaffold design and a scaffold layout for inspectors to gain access to the tubular steel antenna spire on the Great American Tower at Queen City Square, which is the tallest building in the region and the third tallest building in Ohio standing 665 foot tall with 41 stories. Due to the persistent winds at 500 feet and a narrow scaffold structure bracing and securing the scaffold from excessive movement was a scaffold engineering priority. Through the assistance of Michael Murphy with Thornton Tomasetti, we came to the conclusion that cables were the best way to anchor the scaffold system to the existing structure. Cable locations were strategically placed with maximum load capacities calculated for a safe and secure scaffold system placement. The weight of the scaffold imposed on the roof also had to be addressed. The maximum column load was 3,850 lb. with an average column load of 2,000 lb. This was achieved by rearranging the overall layout for best column load distribution conditions. Mr. Murphy provided the I-beam layout assuring the total load of the scaffold layout would be properly distributed throughout the existing steel members at the roof elevations.

"Dave Seibert with American Scaffold was Universal Manufacturing's main source of information and put us in contact with project engineers at Thornton Tomasetti. They were responsible for the Great American Tower structure and in turn facilitated our scaffold design," said Bill Munsch, Scaffold Engineer at Universal Manufacturing. "In a world of multi-tasking, time and efficiency is priceless. One of the main reasons this project was successful is because of the professionalism of the people involved."
